The goals of NIAMS’ funding policies are to maximize the impact of our investments in research into the causes, treatments, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

In a change to our funding approach, for FY2024 NIAMS has set aside 20% of our RPG budget for paying applications that fall outside our R01 payline

As part of that process, the Institute will consider several criteria that aim to ensure that we support a broad variety of science, study populations, investigators, and institutions, reflecting our Scientific Mission. Information about Institute priorities is provided in our Strategic Plan as well as Notices of Special Interest, found in the NIH Guide.

Applicants are encouraged to contact NIAMS program staff with questions and read our Director’s Letter for more information on our evolving approach.
