NIAMS Selects Dr. Anna E. Mazzucco as Next Deputy Director

NIAMS has selected Anna E. Mazzucco, Ph.D., as the next NIAMS Deputy Director. Dr. Mazzucco assumes the position vacated by Robert Carter, M.D., who retired from federal service. As NIAMS Deputy Director, Dr. Mazzucco will lead NIAMS participation in a variety of projects and initiatives and manage daily institute operations.

Dr. Mazzucco’s long and successful tenure at NIH includes leading roles in a variety of important initiatives focused on NIH-wide collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches. She served as Deputy Director of The Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative®, an NIH-wide effort to speed scientific solutions to stem the national opioid public health crisis. Dr. Mazzucco also played a pivotal role in launching the NIH INCLUDE (INvestigation of Co-occurring conditions across the Lifespan to Understand Down syndromE) Project, an NIH-wide program working to improve health for individuals with Down Syndrome.

Most recently, she served as Senior Advisor to the NIH Deputy Director for Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives and as NIH’s acting Associate Deputy Director in the Immediate Office of the Director. She earned her Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Harvard Medical School.
