Lindsey A. Criswell, M.D., M.P.H., D.Sc., has been named director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). Dr. Criswell is currently vice chancellor of research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).  She is a professor of rheumatology and a professor of orofacial sciences at UCSF. She expects to join NIH in early 2021, as the third director in the history of NIAMS.

“Dr. Criswell has rich experience as a clinician, researcher and administrator. Her ability to oversee the research program of one of the country’s top research-intensive medical schools, and her expertise in autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, make her well-positioned to direct NIAMS,” said NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins. “I look forward to having her join the NIH leadership team early next year.”

As NIAMS director, Dr. Criswell will oversee the Institute’s annual budget of nearly $625 million, which supports research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases. The Institute seeks to advance health through biomedical and behavioral research as well as through research training and dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

Robert H. Carter, M.D., acting director at NIAMS, applauded the selection. “Once Dr. Criswell is on board, I will remain an active part of the Institute as deputy director. I am committed to doing everything I can to support and assist her as she brings new energy and vision to NIAMS. With help from the remarkable NIAMS community, we will move forward the science of rheumatic, musculoskeletal, and skin diseases to improve the lives of millions.”
