NIAMS Standing Meetings Committees
The NIAMS Scientific Review Branch (SRB) has two standing study sections: Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Clinical Trials (AMSC) and Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (AMS). These study sections meet three times a year with a panel of members who have been appointed to serve either 4- or 6- year terms.
Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Clinical Trials Study Section (AMSC)
The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Clinical Trials (AMSC) study section is one of the two chartered (standing) study sections within NIAMS. AMSC reviews NIAMS-specific clinical research applications that are submitted in response to R01, R61, and UG3/UH3 Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs). A wide range of clinical research applications such as clinical observational studies, exploratory clinical trials, and phased clinical trial implementation cooperative agreements are reviewed by this study section.

Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Study Section (AMS)
The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (AMS) Study Section reviews Research Career Development Award applications (K01, K08, K23, K24, K25, and K99/R00). In addition, the study section reviews the Small Grant Program for NIAMS K01, K08, K23, and K25 recipients, Small Research Grants (R03), and Conference Grants (R13). The study section reviews basic, translational, and clinical science applications that fall within NIAMS mission areas, including arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin diseases.

Special Emphasis Panels (SEPs)
SRB organizes the first level review of applications for a wide variety of programs using one-time or recurring special emphasis panels (SEPs). These review groups are formed on an ad hoc basis to review applications received in response to a request for applications (RFA), NIAMS specific NOFOs, or to manage conflicts of interest for NIAMS standing study section members. The breadth of science in applications, and the variability of expertise needed from round to round, necessitates the recruitment of a unique panel of experts for each SEP review meeting. Reviewers are recruited based on the expertise needed for the set of applications in each meeting.
