NIAMS FY 2024 Enacted Level: $685,465,000
NIAMS is operating under the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law 118-47) signed by President Biden on March 23, 2024. The funding plan below for research and training grants represents the most current information as of the date cited above; however, many factors occurring throughout the fiscal year can affect the operating policies, thus they are subject to change. For clarification it is always best to check with an appropriate Institute official.
See our FY 2024 Funding Polices page and Director’s Letter for details about how NIAMS will prioritize funding applications.
Noncompeting RPGs
Noncompeting awards will be reduced by 3 percent from the amount recommended on the previous Notice of Grant Award, in accordance with NIH fiscal policy (as explained in the Notice). Non-competing continuation awards that have already been funded in FY 2024 at 10 percent below the amount indicated in the previous Notice of Award will be partially restored to the 3 percent reduction. Commitments for continuation awards in FY 2025 and beyond will remain unchanged. These reductions are made in the interest of awarding as many new grants as possible, while enabling NIAMS to continue our deep commitment to careers, trainees, and early-stage investigators, despite the large commitment base for ongoing grants.
Competing RPGs
- Competing R01 applications will be paid through the percentile of 8.0.
- NOTE: This percentile payline does not apply to grants requesting $500,000 or more direct costs in any year. See NIAMS Large Grant Policy for Applications.
- Competing R01 applications from early-stage investigators will be paid through the percentile of 15.0.
- Competing R21 applications will be paid through the percentile of 8.0.
- Competing R15 applications will be paid through the payline percentile of 27.0.
- Competing R03 applications will be paid through the payline priority score of 21.
- Reductions from direct costs recommended will be approximately 12 percent. No reductions will be taken on applications with direct costs of $100,000 or less.
- Rarely, NIAMS receives an application that is within the Institute's payline but is deemed to be of low program priority. In such instances, these cases are discussed in depth with members of the Council before the Institute Director makes a final funding decision. An application can be considered low priority for many reasons, including (but not limited to) redundancy with other projects, concerns about the ultimate relevance of the proposed study's results, or a lack of scientific premise.
SBIR/STTR
- The payline for SBIR applications will be paid through the priority score 26.
- The payline for STTR applications will be paid through the priority score 19.
