Summary
Nandu Saravanan received his B.S. in Neurobiology & Physiology from the University of Maryland, College Park. While at Maryland, Nandu worked in the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory led by Dr. Sushant Ranadive. Furthermore, he served as a lecture and laboratory teaching assistant for the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry for over two years. Previously, Nandu spent time at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in the Laboratory of Obesity and Aging Research under the guidance of Dr. Jay Chung, where he studied mitochondrial immunology—specifically focusing on the physiological significance of voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) oligomerization in T-Cells and the efficacy of VBIT-4 in preventing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) release.
Currently, Nandu works as a Postbaccalaureate Fellow in the Clinical and Investigative Orthopedics Surgery Unit at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) under Dr. Timothy Bhattacharyya.
Research Statement
Nandu’s research is divided into two broad categories. The first track uses clinical databases and census data to perform large-scale epidemiological studies involving orthopedic surgery and patient outcomes. Nandu also studies the pathophysiology and molecular mechanisms of the rare bone disease melorheostosis using patient-derived fibroblasts and iPSCs.
