Summary
Mariana Correia Marques, M.D., is a Lawrence Shulman Scholar in Translational Research at the NIAMS. She completed her medical school training at the Universidade de Brasília (UnB) and did her first pediatrics residency at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), both in Brazil. Dr. Correia Marques then moved to the United States and did a second residency in pediatrics at the Boston Combined Residency Program. She did her first year of pediatric rheumatology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Correia Marques transferred as a second year to the combined Children’s National Hospital program and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Correia Marques has been passionate about research in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) since her fellowship when she encountered several patients with the condition who had been refractory to all the available treatments. These patients motivated her to focus on translational research in sJIA.
Research Statement
Dr. Correia Marques started working with Dr. Michael Ombrello at NIAMS to understand the genetic background of patients with sJIA, with the final objective of identifying potential pathways for targeted therapy. During her fellowship, she studied the role of variants in genes associated with familial forms of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in patients with sJIA. She has also worked with patient-led organizations to develop a survey to identify the tolerability of the COVID-19 vaccine in patients with sJIA.
In recognition of her work, in 2023, she was awarded one of the Distinguished Fellow Awards by the American College of Rheumatology. As a NIAMS Scholar in Translational Research, Dr. Correia Marques will continue her pursuit to understand the mechanisms that drive sJIA and contribute to treatment-refractory disease courses.
