Summary
Klajdi Begaj earned his M.D. from Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, where he also obtained a Research Doctorate in Medicine through the Mainz Research School of Translational Biomedicine. His doctoral research at the Institute of Translational Immunology focused on developing siRNA-based strategies to modulate macrophage phenotypes for treating chronic inflammatory diseases.
Before joining the Cutaneous Leukocyte Biology Section at NIAMS as a visiting postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Begaj was a dermatology resident at the Department of Dermatology of the University Medical Center Mainz.
Research Statement
Dr. Begaj’s current research explores the mechanisms underlying drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DiHS/DRESS). His work integrates single-cell technologies to identify immune pathways that drive persistent inflammation and autoimmunity following severe drug reactions. Building on his prior research, Dr. Begaj is additionally investigating how cutaneous macrophages develop and shape the immune landscape of the skin. This research aims to define the roles of macrophage subsets in both skin homeostasis and pathological immune responses.
