Scientific Review Information for Applicants

The Scientific Review Branch (SRB) is responsible for the initial peer review of specific research grant applications assigned to NIAMS. These include:

  • Clinical trial applications;
  • Contract proposals;
  • Applications for Research Centers, Loan Repayment Programs, scientific meetings, and training and career development; and,
  • Applications responding to notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) published by NIAMS.

External peer reviewers selected from the grant community participate in the reviews, and an overall impact/priority score is given for each grant application. Scores range from 10 (best) to 90 (worst). The Scientific Review Officer (SRO) prepares an official document (Summary Statement) for each reviewed application. Scores and summary statements are used by Extramural Program division staff and NIAMS Advisory Council Members when making final funding recommendations.

Scores for applications reviewed by NIAMS will be released within three business days after the review meeting. Summary statements for applications reviewed by NIAMS will be available approximately 30 days after the review meeting and no later than 30 days before the next Advisory Council meeting.

Applicants can access their summary statement through the status module in the eRA Commons. The SRO is the applicant’s point of contact from the time the application is submitted until the summary statement is released.

If you do not see what you are looking for, please contact an SRB staff member – your input is important and appreciated.
