Special Emphasis Panels (SEPs)

In addition to standing study sections, the Scientific Review Branch (SRB) organizes the initial review of applications for a wide variety of programs using one-time or recurring special emphasis panels (SEPs). SEPs are review groups formed on an ad hoc basis to review applications received in response to a Request for Applications (RFAs), NIAMS-specific Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs), or to manage conflicts of interest for NIAMS standing study section members.

The breadth of science in applications and the variability of expertise needed from round to round necessitates the recruitment of a unique panel of experts for each SEP review meeting. Reviewers are recruited based on the expertise needed for the set of applications in each meeting.

Applications typically reviewed by SEPs include:

The terms "standing study section" and "scientific review group (SRG)" are normally used for continuing review groups. These study sections meet three times a year with a panel of members who have been appointed to serve either a four or six-year term. Temporary members are usually recruited to provide any additional expertise needed.

Information about application assignment (review and institute/center) is accessed through the eRA Commons site.

NIAMS study section meeting rosters are posted on the Office of Extramural Research website. Meeting rosters are posted 30 days prior to the meeting.
