Dr. Criswell talked with NIH MedlinePlus Magazine about how diverse ideas can help us better understand conditions such as autoimmune diseases (when the immune system attacks healthy cells by mistake) and initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion in research.

The FY2024 NIAMS Congressional Justification is the annual presentation to Congress that justifies the entire NIAMS budget request and reflects the continuing mission to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

On May 2, 2023, NIAMS Scientific Director of Intramural Research, Dr. John O’Shea , was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences at the conclusion of the Academy’s 160 th annual meeting. This designation – considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can achieve – recognizes distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
