On July 28, 2015, NIAMS Director Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., at the invitation of the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA), accompanied AADA President Mark Lebwohl, M.D., on several courtesy visits with Members of Congress. The visits were organized by the AADA to raise awareness about the importance of dermatology research.

Drs. Katz and Lebwohl met with Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), Sen. William Cassidy (R-LA), Rep. Charles Dent (R-PA), and Rep. Charles Fleishmann (R-TN), as well as key staffers in each office. Dr. Lebwohl highlighted recent advances in research on common skin diseases such as psoriasis, and rare diseases such as pseudoxanthoma elasticum. He also discussed the important contributions of the NIH to the development of new treatments for skin conditions. Dr. Katz discussed the role of basic research in developing new therapies, as well as NIH support for the training of the next generation of biomedical scientists.
