In recognition of Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, NIAMS hosted a Twitter chat on juvenile arthritis (JA) on Monday, July 25, 2016. For this chat, NIAMS partnered with the Arthritis Foundation, the American College of Rheumatology and the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA). Robert Colbert, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of the NIAMS Pediatric Translational Research Branch, provided subject matter expertise. Topics in the chat included symptoms, treatments, life impact, patient support, research and resources for families affected by JA.

Nearly 300,000 American children have a form of JA. Studies have led to more effective treatments in recent years, allowing many children with the disease to live without disability. Current research is making progress in identifying the genetic factors, biomarkers and mechanisms of inflammation in JA.

Using the hashtag #JAchatNIH, the chat reached 1,026,336 Twitter users, making 6,088,711 impressions. The chat is archived at https/
