Sarah Aitken graduated from Clemson University with a dual Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Genetics in May 2019. She is interested in entering a D.M.D/Ph.D program after completion of her IRTA Fellowship at NIAMS.
Sarah works with Dr. Emily Chu to investigate the roles of ANK and ENPP1 in periodontal development. ANK and ENPP1 are regulators that help control extracellular concentrations of phosphate and pyrophosphate, which in turn regulates the mineralization of bones and teeth. The aim of this research is to further define ANK and ENPP1 roles in cementogenesis, with the hope of developing new therapies for periodontal tissue regeneration.
