Kathleen Bashant is a graduate student in the NIH-Oxford/Cambridge Scholars program. At the NIH, she is mentored by Dr. Mariana Kaplan, NIAMS, and Dr. Nehal Mehta, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Her research is in collaboration with Professor Edwin Chilvers and Professor Willem Ouwehand at the University of Cambridge.
Ms. Bashant’s research is focused on associations between the genetics, biomechanical properties, and pathogenicity of neutrophils under chronic and acute inflammatory conditions. At the NIH, she studies neutrophils within lupus and psoriasis. At the University of Cambridge, she is using real-time deformability cytometry (RT-DC) and the NIHR Genetic BioResource to study neutrophil biomechanics and genetics.
