Letter From Dr. Stephen I. Katz: Make Sure Your Applications’ Appendices Comply with NIH Policy

Dear NIAMS Grantee:

I am writing to make you aware of the policy that strictly limits the appendix materials that can be included with applications submitted to NIH, AHRQ, and NIOSH. Unfortunately, recent non-adherence to this policy caused 10 NIAMS applications to be returned to the applicants from CSR without review. Unless the funding opportunity announcement specifies additional materials, appendices are restricted to

  • Blank informed consent/assent forms (all applications),
  • Blank surveys, questionnaires, and/or data collection instruments (all applications),
  • Clinical trial protocols (only those applications proposing clinical trials), and
  • Investigator's brochure from an Investigational New Drug (IND) application (only those applications proposing clinical trials).

No other items are allowed in the Appendix.

An application that is submitted with appendix materials other than those specifically covered by the policy will be automatically withdrawn as noncompliant and will not be reviewed. Instead, the application must be submitted again, with a compliant appendix, for any subsequent due date.

To further clarify the policy, NIH maintains a list of frequently asked questions that provides examples of materials that are not allowed in appendices.

We also invite you to listen to two new "All About Grants" podcasts for more information.

We encourage you to share this announcement with colleagues and collaborators.
